We have officially changed or initiation fee. Effective immediately there is a one time $350.00 Initiation Fee for new members (deducted by employer throught a check-off authorization at a rate of $1.00 per hour until paid). Members who become expelled are treated as new members as must re-initiate. Once initiation fee is paid then working dues and monthly dues take effect.
- When do I become a Union Member?
Applicants with no experience will be dispatched as a Pre-Apprentice for a period of 90 days (3 months). Upon successful completion of your 90 days, you must report & sign up with the Apprenticeship Program. The employer reserves the right to shorten this time. Applicants with some experience will sign-up with the Apprenticeship Program and the employer will evaluate your experience, then place you in the appropriate Apprenticeship Level, this will determine your pay rate. You have now started initiating towards membership.
- How long does it take to become a member?
Once payment of your initiation fees have been confirmed by the local, we would forward your application to the International for approval. The Int’l will conduct an investigation then issue a card with your membership number back to the local. We will contact you upon receipt & invite you to attend a Union Meeting where you will be initiated as a member. This process may take several months.
- When do I get my health insurance?
You become eligible for insurance once your employer has reported and paid a total of 240 hours to the Health & Welfare Fund in your behalf. Once you have reached your 240 hours, you may come in and fill out an Enrollment Form to cover your family (remember to bring in the proper documentation). Typically you would become eligible for insurance on the 1st day of the 4th month.
- What’s deducted off my check?
Initiation fees check-off dues and $20.00 monthly dues.
- What happens when I get laid off, fired or quit?
When you become separated from employment, you must report to the Union and be placed in the “out of work” list, we will dispatch on a first come, first serve basis. You may also be eligible for unemployment benefits.
- Can I seek work on my own?
No, you must report to the Union office.
- If I’m not married, is my family still covered by my Health Insurance?
No, you must be married, although your children may be eligible if you are the legal guardian.
- What are my responsibilities as a Union Member?
- Everyone is an organizer; you are responsible for the success or failure of your union.
- Get educated; there is information available to you as a member like: Local Constitution & By-Laws, Collective Bargaining Agreement, Code of Conduct.
- Become involved, attend Union Meetings, become a shop steward, volunteer in the Negotiations Committee, participate in Union Elections, care about what goes on in your Union.
